Sydney hotel worker charged after “frenzied” scissor attack

A woman has been charged over a violent stabbing at one of Sydney’s most prestigious hotels, with police describing the early-morning incident as a “frenzied” assault between colleagues.

Officers were called to the Intercontinental Hotel on Macquarie Street around 2.20am after reports that a worker had been attacked in a staff-only area.

Police allege a 31-year-old woman stabbed her 30-year-old coworker multiple times in the face, back, and hands using scissors. The victim, who works at the hotel’s concierge desk, was treated by paramedics and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition. She will undergo surgery.

A second employee, who tried to intervene, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to hospital.

The alleged attacker was arrested at the scene and later charged at Day Street Police Station with wounding with intent to murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. She has been refused bail and is due to appear in Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

“We're unable to [identify a] motive for this crime other than all three persons involved in this incident are coworkers,” Chief Inspector Gary Coffey told reporters.

“We have to pay tribute to the coworkers who intervened because the situation could have been a lot worse than what it is,” he said.

In a statement, the hotel acknowledged the “isolated staff incident” and said it was supporting employees while the investigation continues.
