Firehouse Hotel hits the market after 25 years

After nearly a quarter of a century behind the bar, veteran publican Mark Barry hopes of fetching more than A$30 million for the Firehouse Hotel in North Sydney.

Barry is calling last drinks after listing the heritage pub which he transformed from a heritage-listed fire station into a popular local pub during North Sydney’s high-rise boom. Now, as the area enjoys another wave of development, the Firehouse is back on the market in what’s expected to be a landmark transaction.

HTL Property’s Andrew Jolliffe and Dan Dragicevich are handling the sale, which marks the first public offering of a freehold hotel in North Sydney’s CBD in more than four decades.

“This legendary building commenced its life pouring water from fire hoses in 1895, and now pours beer out of its 30 beer taps over 140 years later,” Jolliffe said.

The Firehouse has become known for its eye-catching facade, well-kept interiors and a large first-floor terrace. “Few hotels demonstrate such a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to design, presentation and customer experience – accordingly, the Firehouse Hotel enjoys a deserved reputation as one of the best in its class Australia-wide,” he added.

Located next to major developments including the cantilevered 88 Walker tower and Citadines Hotel, the venue features 28 gaming machines and holds a rarely used 3am licence.

Dragicevich said North Sydney’s evolution continues to boost the area’s commercial and residential appeal. “The remarkable revitalisation of North Sydney – highlighted by the recent opening of the Victoria Cross Metro rail station – has catalysed significant growth in both corporate and residential populations within the harbourside suburb.”
