Pub betting battle: V'landys backs Tabcorp's Gil McLachlan

A significant dispute is unfolding in the world of horse racing and pub wagering, drawing in some of the industry's most influential figures. At the heart of the matter is Tabcorp's new chief executive, Gillon McLachlan, who is initiating major changes to how the betting giant interacts with local pubs.

NSW thoroughbred administrator Peter V'landys – the chief executive of Racing NSW and chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission – is firmly endorsing McLachlan's vision. This support carries considerable weight, particularly as the Australian Hotels Association (AHA), representing thousands of pubs, is strongly opposing Tabcorp's proposed adjustments.

As initially reported by The Australian Financial Review, Tabcorp intends to cease direct payments to thousands of pubs for hosting its betting terminals. In return, the company is promising significant refurbishments to hotel facilities, increased investment in promotions, and the waiving of Sky Racing subscription fees. It's a bold move, and it's putting Tabcorp on a direct collision course with hotels and clubs across the country.

V'landys has openly expressed his backing for McLachlan's plan.

"We are supportive of Gil and what he’s trying to do," V'landys said.

"He is trying to eradicate that monopolistic attitude that Tabcorp has had and realises they’re in a very competitive market. He’s really trying to shake it up."

He also offered a piece of advice to the AHA: "I would urge the [Australian Hotels Association] to wait and see the total vision and strategy before making any judgment."
