Bayfield family embarks on $3 million transformation of Dee Why Hotel

A $3 million renovation is now underway at the Dee Why Hotel, with the Bayfield family—longstanding operators in the northern beaches hospitality scene—spearheading the project.

The hotel, which reopened in 2010 as part of the Dee Why Grand development after the original 1930s building was demolished, has been under the Bayfields’ ownership since 1977. Although the current venue is just 15 years old, the family believes the time is right for a substantial refresh.

Led by brothers Mark and Wayne Bayfield and Wayne’s son Kaine, the family has extensive experience in the pub industry. Past ventures have included the Newport Arms, Narrabeen Sands, and Woollahra’s Light Brigade.

Kaine Bayfield, the company’s chief operating officer, said the transformation would include a nostalgic design overhaul with retro elements and a tribute to family heritage. Central to the revamp is the return of “Mr B’s”—a nod to the venue’s original 1990s sports bar named after family patriarch Neville Bayfield.

The revitalised sports bar will feature a 10-metre-long TV wall—the largest on the northern beaches—set within a lively space designed with bold carpet patterns, vibrant upholstery, and an emphasis on natural light.

Design accents will introduce a palette of turmeric mustard, eucalyptus green, pink sand, and natural timber, alongside polished tiles, aiming to create a brighter and more welcoming interior.

“It still looks great, but it has been 15 years since it reopened,” he said.

“It’s time for a refresh and the place needed to be lightened up a bit. It’s quite dark.

“The sports bar is going to offer one of the best sports viewing experiences in Sydney, and the feel of the entire venue will be lifted,’ Kaine said.

“And a bunch of our competitors around us have done renovations.

“We wanted to give our locals and the community something to talk about.

“Something fresh and new”.

The restaurant, to be called Jade’s will also receive a makeover.

It will be a  “lush emerald greenhouse inspired bistro and private event space” and will feature a new seasonal-based menu.

The pub will retain its famous burger specials.

The pub will trade as normal while renovations occur.

“We have a four-generation legacy at Dee Why Hotel, and we are so proud of what we are going to deliver to the community.”

Works are expected to be completed by the end of July.
