Head chef leaves Australia’s best restaurant

Australia’s best restaurant has lost its head chef, who is now looking for a coastal change.

Brisbane’s Agnes in Fortitude Valley was named Australia’s No.1 restaurant in the coveted Gourmet Traveller Awards last year. It is only the second Queensland restaurant in 44 years to win the trophy. The first was E’cco Bistro in 1997.

Head chef Alex Gregg was with the restaurant for three years, building the fire-powered eatery’s reputation.

“It’s been an amazing three years,” Gregg said.

“My partner and I are thinking of a bit of a coastal change so that was the driving force behind it.”

Gregg worked under executive chef Ben Williamson and elevated the restaurant with unique dishes all cooked using nothing but fire, flame and smoke.

Previously, Gregg worked at Melbourne’s acclaimed MoVida restaurant, before heading to Queensland in 2021.

“[I’m] super happy with everything I achieved at Agnes – definitely finished up on a high note,” he said.

While he has no immediate plans, he is looking at a smaller place on the Gold Coast.

Sous chef Ryan Carlson will take over as head chef at Agnes.
