11 Sydney restaurants fined for food safety breaches

The NSW Food Authority has published a list of popular eateries across the state that it claims have breached food safety standards.

The name and shame list appears on their website.

Six penalties were issued to the Hong Kong Kitchen at Chatswood, the greatest number issued to any one eatery for the first quarter of 2021.

Each offence resulted in an $880 fine and there was at least one previous warning given for each offence.

The offences included:

  • Fail to store food in such a way that it is protected from the likelihood of contamination - previous warning given
  • Fail to maintain easily accessible hand washing facilities on the food premises - previous warning given
  • Fail to, when processing food, minimise the time food remains at temperatures that permit the growth of infectious or toxigenic micro-organisms - previous warning given
  • Fail to ensure food contact surfaces of equipment is in a clean and sanitary condition - previous warning given
  • Fail to have a temperature measuring device at the premises where potentially hazardous food is handled - previous warnings given
  • Fail to ensure single use items are not reused - previous warnings given

Campsie restaurant, Yummy King BBQ Kitchen came in with the second highest amount of fines with five $880 fines issued.

Yummy King BBQ Kitchen was found to have:

  • Fail to display potentially hazardous food under temperature control - previous warnings given
  • Fail to store food in such a way that it is protected from the likelihood of contamination - previous warnings given
  • Fail to maintain easily accessible hand washing facilities on the food premises - previous warnings given
  • Fail to enclose garbage or recyclable matter, if this is necessary to keep pests and animals away from it
  • Fail to maintain the food premises to the required standard of cleanliness

Any businesses issued with a penalty notice remain on the name and shame list for 12 months.

  • Penalty $1320: Sale of food found to contain illegal preservative (sulphur dioxide) in pork mince.
