Melbourne to get second China Town in Box Hill
A “New Chinatown” is on the cards for Box Hill as part of a $450 million development by hospitality and property developer Golden Age Group.
The suburb is already a hub for Chinese culture with more than 35 per cent of its residents claiming Chinese ancestry.
New Chinatown will offer 10,000 square metres of retail space over three levels including food and beverage retailers, as well as a 4,000 square metre “Hawker Hall” with street-style food stalls.
Fender Katsalidis Architects will be responsible for both the new precinct and the two residential apartment towers that are part of the development. The towers are slated to be complete by the end of the year.
Golden Age Group founder Jeff Xu says the space will celebrate Melbourne’s multiculturalism.
“New Chinatown will craft its own identity as the intersection between ancient traditions and modern China; a melting pot where history and the contemporary come together,” Xu said in a statement.
