Newtown pub slammed for seeing the funny side to Jesus’ crucifixion

Sydney’s fun police were out in force after an inner west pub’s joke about Jesus saw hundreds of people take to Facebook to complain.

Mary’s Newtown shared a Facebook post depicting Jesus with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other. Underneath was the caption; “Jesus got hammered for his sins, you can too”.

However, the humorous attempt to inform patrons of their Easter opening hours turned into a holy war online, with the post soon swamped by negative comments from angry Christians.

Facebook page Orthodox Christianity encouraged its followers to write negative things about the business, sharing to its page, “Brothers and sisters, PLEASE give this place a bad rating, they are Mocking our Lord Jesus Christ”. And lo, they did.

“Horrible place. No customer service and the burgers were truely atrocious. Rather eat at Maccas,” summed up the many posts that subsequently appeared.

However, loyal patrons to the pub decided not to turn the other cheek and stepped up to defend their watering hole.

“Amazing food. staff are top notch. Keep up the good work. Any publicity is good publicity,” one loyal punter commented.

“For those wanting to seek an informed review of Mary’s, this non descriptive review was put up at a time where some people took offence to a meme posted by the page,” stated another.

Mary’s Newtown will be open from 12pm on Good Friday and all long weekend, conditional on any plagues, pestilence or the appearance of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
