Port Office Hotel burns after fire starts in kitchen

The Port Office Hotel in Brisbane has been saved from major damage after a fire started in the kitchen and spread into the roof.

Workers initially believed they had the fire under control, not realising it was burning inside the roof.

Roma Street fire station officer Samuel Carrigg said the fire started on the grill but had “gotten a bit bigger than they expected”.

“The fire on the grill went up through the exhaust vent and then the radiated heat spread to the air conditioning unit,” he said.

The heat inside the exhaust vent was so strong that plastic tubing around the air conditioning unit had been ignited.

Carrigg said the fire was extinguished quickly by emergency services and while there was no major structural problems there was “significant” damage to electrical cabling and air conditioning system inside the roof.
