Proposal for 55-metre-tall hotel in Hobart CBD knocked back
Hobart City Council has rejected a proposal for a 55-metre-high hotel development in Hobart's CBD over concerns the building would be too large for the residential area.
Singapore-based Fragrance Group redesigned the Collins Street hotel proposal for the building last year, reducing its height to 55 metres, and allowing for 256 hotel rooms, a 1,000 seat-conference hall, restaurants and car parking.
The council received 1,456 submissions from residents opposing the hotel, and just three in favour, with Acting Lord Mayor Helen Burnet saying the building would cause an "unreasonable loss of amenity to nearby residences" if it was approved.
In their report to council, officers warned the proposed hotel would exceed maximum height limits, dominate adjacent places of cultural significance, adversely affect the heritage values of nearby places of cultural significance, and require the demolition of a building that was capable of continued beneficial use.
