Chemical scare at Sydney’s Pullman Hotel

A worker who accidentally mixed together two swimming pool chemicals caused an evacuation of Sydney’s Pullman Hotel on Wednesday.

Thirty people required treatment from NSW Ambulance crews after being exposed to an odour from the chemicals used in the roof-top pool.

Speaking to 9News, Fire and Rescue NSW Duty Commissioner Charles Begley said one of the workers had mixed two of the pool chemicals together inadvertently.

"The (chemical) drums aren't clearly marked so people do make mistakes," he said.

A statement from the hotel confirmed two guests, four permanent staff and two contract staff exposed to the irritant were taken to hospital.

“The dosage of the pool chemicals was incorrect, leading to a non-toxic irritant gas being emitted and entering the adjacent air intake.  This resulted in some areas at the top of the hotel being evacuated,” the hotel said.

Staff and guests have since returned to all levels of the hotel.

“The health and safety of our guests and employees is paramount and the property has since been tested by NSW Fire Brigade and deemed safe,” the hotel stated.
