A new resort for Rottnest Island

It has taken five years of planning but Rottnest Island is finally getting a new resort.

Rottnest Island Authority has  approved the proposal from Perth hospitality group The Prendiville Group to build the luxury resort on the island, a a key drawcard for tourists coming to Western Australia.

The $30 million, 80-room resort is estimated to open in 2020.

The resort will be designed by Christou Design Group, the same firm that put together the City Beach Surf Club, Allendale Square and the Scarborough Beach Pool.

They are designing it to include everything - feature suites, beachfront villas with private pools, two pools, a gym, a day spa and the island’s first outdoor rooftop bar.

Prendiville Group chairman Peter Prendiville says the main focus will be on sustainable design.

So as part of that, the resort will use renewable energy and minimise waste.

The resort has yet to be named.

But it will be built adjacent to the existing Hotel Rottnest.

Now Hotel Rottnest’s 18 rooms have been closed to the public.

But the hotel’s existing bar and restaurant will continue to trade during construction.

The new resort is a major development for The Prendiville Group. It has already refurbished its Tradewinds Hotel on the Canning Highway with its $7 million renovation stretching through the 83 guest rooms, gym, pool area, parking, and rooftop bar.

The Prendiville Group also owns the Cottesloe Beach Hotel, Broome’s Mangrove Hotel and Sandalford Winery in the Swan Valley.

The resort is the second major Rottnest Island development to be announced in the last few weeks.

In April, work began on a new $20-million eco-resort on the island.

Eco Village Rottnest Island, the first major development on the island for more than 30 years, will located on the island’s north-eastern tip at Pinky’s Beach and  will be the island’s first eco-retreat.
