Barangaroo Towers could be the world’s best tall building

Barangaroo Towers are in the running to be named the world’s best tall building.

The site has been selected as a finalist in the global competition.

The three International Towers in Barangaroo, by developer Lendlease, was nominated in the last nine in the category of the best tall building in Asia and Australasia.

Its competition includes other office and hotel buildings from Singapore, China and South Korea.

Mirvac’s The EY Centre on 200 George Street in the city, the new HQ for the company, is one of the five global finalists in the best construction category, competing against buildings in New York, Salt Lake City and Shenzhen.

Added to that is the Lumiere, also on George Street, and by Frasers Property Australia competing for the special ten year award. Nominated in the final eight competitors, it’s up against projects in Dubai, China, the US, the UK, and Bahrain.

The prestigious annual competition is run by the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and the winners will be announced  in May at the group’s first Tall + Urban Innovation Conference.

The event is being held to celebrate the best in innovative tall buildings, urban spaces, building technologies, and construction practices from around the world. One building will also be named as the overall worldwide winner.

The awards are not only a celebration of the world’s best tall buildings. They are also important for influencing the awarding of future contracts globally.

“The finalists truly represent the pinnacle of excellence in the field of tall buildings,” awards jury chair Karl Fender, director of Australian firm Fender Katsalidis Architects told Commercial Real Estate. “Being recognised by the world’s premier authority on tall buildings is a great honour, and the opportunity to showcase these quality projects to a global audience helps drive innovation across all disciplines in our industry.”
