Jacksons on George makeover

Sydney’s late night live music venue Jacksons on George closed its doors on Sunday.

It’s another Sydney music venue gone and follows last April’s closure of Newtown Social Club, replaced with mini-golf bar Holey Moley.

But in this case, it’s coming back, better than ever before.

Development company Lendlease is giving it a complete revamp.

The venue, previously leased by Gallagher Hotels and opened in 1986, will be turned into a  new three-level gastropub and rooftop bar, all created by local architecture firm Stewart Hollenstein.

Lendlease has released artist’s impressions of what it will look like.

The new venue will be something that seems to have come straight out of the future – a slick rooftop bar with ceramic tiles on a new wrap-around façade   inspired by classic Australian pub tiles.  The façade will be like a spaceship wrapping the building. It’s a design inspired by the tiles of traditional Aussie boozers.

It will look nothing like the old “dive”.

Work demolishing the current Jacksons on George building at 174-176A George Street is expected to start in the next 30 days.

The  Central Sydney Planning Committee is now assessing a development application (DA) of the new premises.

All this is part of a broader redevelopment of the site.

The area will include a commercial building, a community space, retail-lined laneways and two 55-storey public plazas facing Pitt Street and George Street.

The plan is to turn it into a new dining venue that will a social hub for the business district, with a location and potential views from the outdoor rooftop bar overlooking the new George Street Public Plaza and laneways.

“The building material is inspired by the classic Australian pub tile and the shimmer of the water on Sydney Harbour, while the curved form is influenced by the history of the site as a former boat yard,” Felicity Stewart, director of Stewart Hollenstein told Time Out.
