Luxury Torquay resort slammed following closure

The closure of a restaurant and bar at a luxury Torquay resort has resulted in scathing online reviews.

Guests are angry after the operator of the resort’s on-site restaurant and bar closed down in late September, forcing them to access food and drinks elsewhere and also to cancel major bookings.

One furious guest said staying at the $180-a-night Wyndham Resort Torquay on The Esplanade felt like the “Last Resort”.

She accused it of dropping its service standards. Like, for example, leaving an empty bottle and glasses beside the pool for two days.

Writing on the resort’s Facebook page, Penelope Michelle Lazer said:  “One would be forgiven if you assumed the resort to be abandoned. The outdoor umbrellas still secured down from winter, overgrown and dead plants complement the knee-high weeds throughout.”

Her online review complained about a broken spa, no landline phone connection in her room, a broken ironing board, no TV reception and an Eftpos machine at reception that didn’t work.

Wyndham Resort Torquay responded accordingly, saying it was “definitely not what you should expect from a Wyndham Resort”. They asked her to contact them directly.

Another guest accused the venue of “hick town service” masquerading as a resort following the closure of the on-site food and drink services.

Another wrote on booking.com that the pool and outdoors was beautiful but they only got one sachet of coffee and 15 sachets of sugar and “with no cafe/restaurant open on the premises, this was rather frustrating”.

Resort manager Chris Clark said the venue had refunded organisers of planned events.

“As far as we are aware, the operator which performed conferencing and events services at the resort has contacted anyone with an upcoming booking and refunded their deposits in full,” Mr Clark told the Geelong Advertiser.

“The operator has also cancelled the accommodation bookings held for events. Resort management has not received any complaints about unpaid refunds.”
