Sydney gets its first avocado café

Australia’s first ever avocado-themed café is opening in Sydney.

And it’s named, appropriately enough, Good Fat. Which is true.

The pop-up café will be open for one month, from November 2 until November 30 in Sydney’s Surry Hills.

All the dishes at the café will be under $20. So much for all the lines about smashed avos.

Yes, it will offer a smashed avo. But people will also get everything from Avocado Breakfast Skins which is an avocado smoothie bowl blended with acai, banana and blueberry, topped with fresh mango, granola and hemp seeds, and served in an avocado skin, to what chef Liam Crawley calls an Avocornetto.

That’s avocado ice cream, shaved dark chocolate, sweet pumpkin shortbread cream, and praline, drizzled with salted caramel in a waffle cone.

Crawley has put together a menu of 20 avocado dishes.

It’s all based on similar pop-ups in New York and Amsterdam.

And even before it’s opened, the place is looking for an avocado tester.

That’s right, someone who gets paid in the form of free food for eating buckets of avocados.

The job is being advertised on Seek and the ad sets out clearly what’s required.

“As Head of Avo Control, you will taste test each of the 20 avocado dishes on the menu before Good Fat opens its doors to the public, guaranteeing an avo-licious experience for every customer,” the ad says.

“The Head of Avo Control will also be an avocado ‘avocate’ willing to snap, gram, tweet and FB your avo experience using #OzAvoGoodFat.”

Successful candidates will need a minimum of two years’ experience in smashing avocados on toast or similar. And they will have to know all about how to check avocado ripeness by gently pressing the sweet spot and a healthy history of successful avocado selection.

They will have to be available from October 31.
