Eat Drink Design awards shortlist

There’s a microbrewery in a heritage building, a futuristic coffee bar and a sandstone-walled basement bar.

These are just some of the 94 entrants shortlisted for the 2017 Eat Drink Design Awards.

They were drawn from 156 entries.

The awards are held to celebrate innovation and excellence in the design of hospitality venues.

Jury chairperson Cassie Hansen said the awards take in a wide variety of settings.

“From coffee kiosks and 12-seat restaurants, to takeaway shops and food courts, this year’s Eat Drink Design Awards shortlist reveals the exceptional quality and variety of design in Australia and New Zealand’s hospitality scene,” Hansen told Broadsheet.

The Best Bar Design category for Sydney venues includes Maurice Terzini’s multi-faceted The Dolphin. It was designed by George Livissianis.

Then there are the black-and-white graffiti-style couches by Beni Single in the pub area. They are wrapped in plastic, the walls are bare and whitewashed in certain sections and the menus are scrawled onto brown paper.

Other bars that have been included in the awards are Brick Lane in Double Bay, Goodbar in Paddington, Guillaume Brahimi’s Mosman pub The Buena, Hyatt Regency’s rooftop bar Zephyr and the microbrewery and bar, the Endeavour Tap Room. Sydneysiders will remember that The Endeavour was once home to Sydney’s longest-running colonial hotel.

Restaurants making the cut include the newly opened Mode Kitchen and Bar in the Four Seasons, 12-Micron and Ume Burger in Barangaroo, and out in the west, there’s the Egyptian restaurant Cairo Takeaway, put together by Carnival Design Studio and Bekya in Tramsheds created by Juicy Design.

La Cantina, put together by Blank Creatives, the CBD’s Edition Roasters, 333 Regiment created by Guru Projects and The Dessert Kitchen, presented by Matt Woods Design have been nominated for the Best Design category.

The winners will be announced Tuesday November 14.

The ceremony will take place at The Arts Centre in Melbourne.
