Awards night for Tasmania’s best restaurants, hotels and hospitality

It was a big night at Hobart’s Wrest Point Casino.

The big event was the awards night for Tasmania’s growing hospitality industry.

The Tasmanian Hospitality Association awards were there for the state’s best restaurants, hotels, venues and hospitality workers, a totally comprehensive presentation of what the Apple Isle can be so proud of.

Not surprisingly, the Henry Jones hotel sitting on Hobart’s waterfront took out the top award. The hotel’s Landscape Restaurant and Grill was named restaurant of the year. Not only that, The Henry Jones also claimed best restaurant in a hotel or accommodation venue. And on top of that, it was named the metro hotel of the year.

The Henry Jones is Australia’s first dedicated art hotel, best known for exhibiting more than 500 original and contemporary works of art, showcasing Tasmania’s leading and emerging artists.

Tall Timbers at Smithton up on the north-west coast also cleaned up.  It picked up the regional accommodation of the year award. And it was named the state’s best new tourism initiative award winner.

There were a few other notable award winners.

One was the Saffire which picked up the best deluxe hotel and best fine dining award.

Another one was Zero Davey Apartments in Hunter Street in the state capital.

It won the awards for best apartment suite hotel and best accessible accommodation.

What makes the Tasmanian awards so distinctive is the way they recognise hospitality figures, people contributing to the industry.

Ristorante Da Angelo owner Angelo Fraraccio was given the Premier’s award for contribution to the community

And Hobart alderman Marti Zucco picked up the Bertie Tucceri award winner for service to the industry.

And workers in the industry also picked up awards.

The TasTAFE apprentice of the year award went to third year apprentice Josh Winchester.

Country Club Tasmania’s Steve Irvine was named employee of the year and Mures’ Sunita Kafle was hailed as the state’s rising star in hospitality.
