Campbell’s Store’s $32 million redevelopment

The historic Campbell’s Stores complex on The Rocks in Sydney is being rejuvenated.

Chris and Theo Drivas of hospitality company the Dockside Group have a $32 million redevelopment plan which will see the site getting 12 restaurants, cafes and bars with views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.,

The redevelopment will see work on the decaying sandstone walls. The roof tiling will be replaced and the building’s heritage features will be restored.

There are also plans to install new lifts in the building.

New amenities and kitchen areas to allow fine dining operations will also be installed.

The Waterfront, Wolfies, Italian Village and Imperial Peking restaurants have been closed so that work can get underway.

“We are close to signing a number of high-profile restaurants from both Australia and internationally for leases, which will transform this precinct into a stunning waterfront fine-dining and entertainment destination,” the lessee and developer, Tallawoladah told The Australian.

‘The redevelopment has been a long time coming.

Originally, the plan was for a four-storey glass block concept building to be positioned next to Campbell’s Stores. That was controversial, and there were 100 objections received during a public exhibition two years ago.

That included a personal submission from the NSW Heritage Minister.

The plan went to the Planning Assessment Commission for a final decision.

Tallawoladah’s original plan was to build 16 restaurants, cafes and bars on the site.

It has since scaled that back to 12 ranging from 50 square metres to 700 square metres.

The restoration works are set to begin in July.

Work is expected to be completed by mid-2018.

The project will be managed by architect JPW and construction group Buildcorp.

“The team at Buildcorp are excited by the challenge of marrying modern design and construction with a structure that has stood for nearly 200 years”, said Buildcorp managing director Tony Sukkar in a statement.
