Mungerannie Hotel is on the market

Australia’s weirdest pub, the Mungerannie Hotel, has been put on the auction block.

The Mungerannie sits on Lot 10 on the Birdsville Track, a mere 17 hours north of Adelaide, 202 kilometres from Maree and 314 kilometres from Birdsville.

It’s the only fuel stop between the towns. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere.

The 11.2 hectare property includes a pub, dining room, accommodation, camp amenities and campground, a large home, a workshop, a wetland, hot spring and a four-hole golf course.

It’s selling for $1.2 million.

Owner Phil Gregurke, a former Holden worker who bought the hotel in 2006, is selling it to move on to a new part of his life.

And he’s made it the kind of place that every visitor will be talking about.

He has entertained guests with events like mock weddings, drag shows and yabbie races.

He estimates the pub attracted 200,000 visitors last year.

“It’s a licence to drink, a licence to smoke and you’re far enough away from everything – you’ve got to follow some rules, sure, but you can certainly have some fun out here,” Mr Gregurke told realestate.com.au

“Everyone who comes through the door is treated equal, and I’ve had a lot of fun with everybody.”’

Everybody visiting the pub has a lot of fun. And many leave their own mark, just to let everyone know they have been there.

“People kept leaving things behind so I started cutting big chunks of hair out of people’s heads and putting little tags on them and hanging them from the ceiling,” Mr Gregurke said.

“It’s one of those pubs that’s got everything in it – you can spend a whole day walking around and then come back the following day and find new stuff.

“Most of the hats in the front bar are from people who have worked on the Birdsville Track.”

And whatever is on the bar will be included in the sale, just to maintain the pub’s identity.
