Perth bar wants to serve liquor in the morning

A North Perth small bar owner Oscar Boyne is looking to change the drinking culture out in the west.

He wants to serve alcohol from 7am.

Mr Boyne has applied to the City of Vincent to change his alcohol sales period from 11am-7am at his North Perth small bar The Old Laundry.

Mr Boyne doesn’t see anything that unusual about his bid to change drinking times at his pub.

He says Perth needs to adopt more of a European drinking culture, replacing the local drinking tradition of getting “annihilated” after dark.

He says serving alcohol earlier would create a more mature attitude towards alcohol.

It would allow people to enjoy drink in moderation and imbibe something for their taste — at any time of the day.

That, he says, would be better than using alcohol as a means to get wasted at night.

To explain it, he talks about the way people treat alcohol in his homeland Italy where people drink grappa and black sambuca with their morning coffee. Alcohol in Italy is rarely abused after hours.

“Society in Italy in general has a very different outlook to alcohol than what we do,” Mr Boyne told the West Australian.

“Subsequently, they respect alcohol a lot more than what we do. I think we can rewrite a lot of that and have a much better relationship with alcohol whereby it’s not just consumed for the sake of getting annihilated — we can appreciate alcohol for its taste.”

“Generally speaking, in this country, people don’t start drinking until its past five o’clock and they drink heavily after that. There is no reason why that can’t change.”

And he said there was no problem with demand for alcohol for breakfast. People now are already asking for Bloody Marys and champagne.

Taking it to the council is just the first step.

The council’s recommendation, due tonight, will be sent to the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor for approval.
