We Want Plates campaign takes off

The food industry is now facing a new campaign.

Enraged foodies have taken to social media with the @WeWantPlates hashtag.

The campaign was founded by British food crusader Ross McGinnes who claims he has had a gutful of what he calls “all this style-over-content hipster nonsense.

The result: a global crusade to stop eateries serving food in a novel way. No more food on bits of wood and roof slate. And they don’t want drinks in jam jars and chips in mugs.

“What the food tastes like has become secondary,’’ McGinnes told the media. “Some chefs are more concerned about whether it will look good or quirky on Instagram. Too much time is spent faffing around balancing six chips in a mini wheelbarrow.”

So they taken to Twitter exposing different places. And some of it’s pretty blunt.

Consider this: “Jamie Oliver closes six restaurants and blames Brexit. Nothing to do with serving bland, overpriced food on manky old wooden boards.”

Still some cafes are holding firm. They  reckon if nothing else, it’s a great way to get free publicity,

One example is South Yarra cafe Stepping Stone. Its Kiss and Tell Soldiers dish - eggs with avocado  and toast soldiers served up in an egg carton instead of a plate - was posted on social media.

Stepping Stone manager Timothy Sweet said it’s a good way to get customers talking about the food and where it’s sourced from.

“We really want to show off what we call clean cooking,’’ Sweet told the Leader newspaper. “For us it’s about showing this is a farm to table movement.

“The coolest thing is that the tray actually holds the eggs still while you’re dipping the toast soldiers.”

And then there is popular Asian restaurant Tokyo Tina. It serves up a deconstructed sushi roll which has a mound of rice covered in sushi fillings.

Still, none of that has stopped the We Want Plates movement. The WeWantPlates Facebook page has 60,000 likes from diners around the world and they are regularly posting pictures of the latest crazy food serves.
