In a good sign for the labour market, job vacancies rose 4.5 per cent in the three months to August, according the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

That’s the highest increase in four years.

The latest figures is a sign of Australian edging lower although most of the jobs being created are part time and not full time.

Low interest rates and a weaker Australian are helping industries such as tourism, education and health care, typically large employers.

Total job vacancies rose to 177,300 seasonally adjusted in the June-August quarter. That’s up from 169,600 in May.

Vacancies in the private sector rose 4.6 per cent to 160,100. Again, this was the highest number since 2012. That number was also up 8.2 per cent on the August quarter last year.

Public sector vacancies increased by 4.9 per cent to 17,200, the highest since late 2011.
