Pancakes On The Rocks to close
After decades of being the regular sport for Sydneysiders and visitors, Pancakes On The Rocks is closing – and re-opening,
The 24 hour restaurant, which opened at The Rocks in Sydney on 17 August 1975, is shutting down as part of a massive retail refurbishment at The Rocks Centre.
The flooring, ceilings, lighting and shopfronts at The Rocks Centre are being put through a complete overhaul.
When it’s all finished, Pancakes On The Rocks will be on the upper floor, still at the heart of the Rocks.
It’s all part of $15 million New South Wales government plan to revitalise the retail tenancies at the centre. As part of the overhaul, a number of standalone shopfronts will be completely refurbished.
That includes the retail spaces in George Street as well as the Metcalfe Bond Stores.
Needless to say, all this work has to comply with Conservation Management Plans and strict planning and heritage guidelines.
The Minister for Finance, Services and Property, Dominic Perrottet has made it clear that the heritage fabric of these buildings, so much a unique part of Sydney’s history, is protected.
The minister says the government’s aim is to preserve and highlight the precinct’s heritage values while making sure the place offers the kind of retail mix that makes any visit memorable.
Needless to say, there will be a new tenants coming in over the next 18 months. These include the Endeavour Vintage Beer Co.
It’s been looking around for a suitable place for some time. It plans to open the Endeavour Tap Rooms in The Rocks, providing the place with a brewery, bar and restaurant. There will be a range of beers on tap and a menu featuring smoked produce served feast-style, all accompanied by salads and house-made sauces.
The group behind Pancakes On The Rocks has opened sites at Darling Harbour, Campbelltown, North Strathfield, Beverly Hills and also on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
