Barangaroo restaurant approved

The waterfront promenade of Sydney’s Barangaroo South will be getting a new restaurant.

Barangaroo South on Sydney’s Darling Harbour has been dubbed International Towers Sydney.

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has approved Collins and Turner’s designed restaurant.

The department had received the designs back in August 2015 after Collins and Turner won a design competition for the restaurant in 2013.

The design resembles a series of stacked bowls, gently curving in. There are three layers of curves, one for each level, contrasting with the precinct’s orthogonal masterplan.

It’s all part of a low-rise building offering spaces for casual and fine dining over multiple levels. It will offer covered and open-air dining at the pedestrian promenade level, raised terraces and a roof terrace.

The building is designed as a gateway between the existing low-rise Kings Wharf and the 275-metre towers of Barangaroo.

Importantly, it is oriented west so as to capture the afternoon sun and water views. At the same time, it will be in shadow from morning to early afternoon, right through the year.

A judging panel comprised Lend Lease team members, a Barangaroo Delivery Authority representative and Ivan Harbour (of Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners).

They praised Collins and Turner directors Penny Collins and Huw Turner for their “artistic design” and “well-researched, well-organized and flexible approach.”

It’s a design for an 804-square-metre development accommodating a pub on the ground floor, restaurant on the first floor and bar on the second floor.

The restaurant will be operated by celebrity chef Matt Moran.

“The proposed building provides an innovative design approach for the site which results in balcony structures partially protruding outside of the building envelope,” the department said.

“The Department supports the proposed built form as it marks the entrance to Barangaroo without dominating other buildings or detracting from the predominant building line.”
