Glen Waverley becomes “Chapel Street on steroids”
by Leon Gettler
A rooftop venue is proposed for the development at 52 Montclair Ave, Glen Waverley.
Glen Waverley, one of Melbourne’s most humdrum middle class suburbs is getting a complete makeover with plans to turn it into one of the city’s entertainment hot spots.
Talks are now underway to build a rooftop bar and restaurant for an eight-level building now under construction, just off the thriving Kingsway dining and entertainment precinct.
Now a rooftop bar and restaurant is not normally seen outside Melbourne’s CBD, let alone in a place like Glen Waverley.
Construction of the building, which will have a licence to trade until 1am seven days a week, is expected to be completed by June.
Monash councillor and chair of the Glen Waverley Activity Centre Advisory Committee Geoff Lake is excited about the idea.
“I think Glen Waverley is an emerging Chapel St on steroids ... as far as an activity hub outside of the CBD, there’s not many places that compare,” Mr Lake told the Herald Sun.
“In another 10 years Glen Waverley will be seen as an iconic place to go out for a meal, like Northcote, Chapel St or St Kilda are at the moment.”
The venue will have views to the Dandenongs, Yarra Valley and CBD.
One of the businesses now negotiating to get the building up ha a number of well-known ventures around Monash.
Another owns a rooftop style venue in the CBD.
The big issue now being negotiated is parking. That has to be improved if the area is to become a major entertainment hub,
Ray White Commercial Glen Waverley’s Ryan Trickey says Montclair – the development is at 52 Montclair Ave – will be the first totally commercial building of its height in Glen Waverley.
“The building will house up to 12 tenants, many of whom will be in food and entertainment adding to the reputation of this precinct,” Mr Trickey told the Herald Sun.
“Additionally, new businesses offer the community opportunities for new jobs and at full occupancy the building could employ more than 250 people.”
