Australian food: a global drawcard

by Leon Gettler

Australian food is going global and drawing more international tourists heading Down Under and Australian restaurants are the big drawcard.

Tourism Australia research has found that “great food, wine and local cuisine” is a key factor influencing holiday decision-making for 38 per cent of those polled across 15 key tourism markets.

The survey found that 26 per cent of those who had never visited Australia associated the nation with good food and wine.

However, that figure grew to 60 per cent among those who have travelled Down Under.

When it came to food, wine and cuisine, Australia ranked second across the 15 markets behind only France.

Visitors from Britain, China, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and the United States however, Australia ranked top for food and wine.

To this end, Tourism Australia started up a Restaurant Australia campaign in May 2014 promoting Australia as “the world’s greatest restaurant”.

Since the start of the campaign, spending on food and wine in Australia has grown by nearly 17 per cent to around $700 million.

The arrival of Noma at Sydney’s Barangaroo would have helped showcase Australian cuisine to the world.
