New name and new look for historic Toowoomba pub

FOR longer than many Toowoomba residents remember, the Fiveways Hotel was synonymous with topless waitresses and one of the furthest places from the minds of families looking for somewhere nice to take the kids.

But when new owner Hamish Guy and duty manager Adam Davey took the reins, the first thing they decided was to make the historic Mort St pub a place families could enjoy.

The next thing was to re-name the pub to The Great Northern at Fiveways and complete some major renovations that began in the wake of the 2010-2011 floods.

The result is a watering hole that strikes a tidy balance between historic pub and family restaurant.

Mr Davey said they hoped to see a lot of new faces.

As a father of three children aged six to 10 he believed the best way to attract people to a pub outside the CBD was to make it friendly to people over 30 and young families.

"We wanted to start the new year kicking, so even though we're still waiting on the new signage we didn't want to wait on the re-launch," he said.

"The big reason we did this was for families because it had that name (as a topless bar) for so long and we wanted to find other things to get people in here.

"We've got two pool tables, a new cook, a nice dining area, a good cheap menu and we've booked in two local bands to play every month."
