$3m winners shout pub
The Territory’s latest keno millionaires are still anonymous, but have passed on a heartfelt thank you – and a small chunk of their winnings – to staff at their favourite pub.
The multimillionaires, who won $3 million on NT Keno last month, dropped off the thank-you note to Humpty Doo Tavern staff yesterday.
“We were waiting for the dust to settle a bit before coming in and saying thanks in person, but missed the chance before having to go interstate for a couple of weeks,” said the note, which came with $1000 cash for the staff to share.
“Have a few drinks on us,” the note said.
The two winners, understood to be regulars at the tavern, said they were still trying to absorb their big win. “Hope you don’t mind the fact we want to remain anonymous,” the note said.
“(We) hope that you didn’t think we had forgotten you. We are still trying to come to grip with our win and have a lot on our minds.”
The $3 million 10-Spot Jackpot was the largest NT Keno prize won since June 2014. On the day of the win, the couple kept staff at NT Keno and the Humpty Doo Tavern in suspense, waiting until mid-afternoon to claim their prize.
“NT Keno said this can be life changing and it probably will be in a lot of ways,” they said.
But they promised to keep going back to their favourite watering hole, despite their change in fortune.
“We definitely will keep coming in for the friendly service, great menu and probably more than the odd game of Keno,” the winners said.
The win was the biggest the hotel had ever been involved in, tavern general manager Andrew Case said. But it came on the back of another regular winning nearly $40,000 on a $47 bet on Melbourne Cup Day.
