Council says Adamstown Motel has passed fire safety audits

The ABC has learned that a Newcastle motel, that has been stripped of its authority to provide crisis accommodation, has passed a fire safety audit despite concerns about its ramshackled state.

Earlier this week, the Adamstown Motel was cut off by the New South Wales Government as a crisis accommodation provider, in response to an ABC investigation into allegations of drug dealing and usage.

A Federal Inquiry into the drug ice has also been briefed on incidents at the motel.

The ABC has been told many windows and doors at the motel have no locks, with some blocked by unconventional means.

Questions are now being asked about how the motel has passed health, safety and fire checks.

Newcastle Council said businesses must provide it with a fire safety statement annually, and that must be done by a properly qualified person.

Council said the motel has an up-to-date statement.
