Pizza shop owner Jan told 891 ABC Adelaide the rear of his premises seemed to have suffered the worst of the damage.

"Over the fence we can see it's badly damaged there [with] big hole in the ceiling, that's what I see there," he said.

"It's a lot of damage. We've worked so hard on it to get somewhere, but everything is destroyed."

The shop owner said he got a phone call in the early hours and went to the premises in Lower North East Road with his wife.

"I came here with my wife, about 5 o'clock, I was shocked," he said.

"What can you do? My wife was crying, stressing out and it's hard."

The blaze damaged neighbouring shops including a Chinese restaurant, but police said no-one was in the premises at the time of the fire.

The estimated damage bill from the blaze is about $100,000.

Police said emergency crews got the call just after 3:00am and were keen for anyone who saw suspicious activity to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

Fire investigators are now making a more detailed assessment of the damaged buildings.
