Cherished regional pub closes suddenly

The sudden closure of a cherished regional Victorian pub has rocked the local community.

The Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville, near Daylesford, was recently billed as one of the nation's best country establishments, but will close due to “changing circumstances”.

The pub has a loyal following of patrons who have flocked to its front and parlour bars, restaurant, cinema, accommodation and "two acres of rambling garden".

The closure comes just days they advertised for an experienced second chef and kitchen hand.

"We re-opened last weekend looking forward to 2025. However, during this week our circumstances have changed considerably," the social media post said.

"We are announcing that this weekend will be the last for our kitchen, which will close at end of service this Sunday (January 19)."

While the kitchen will close, the pub will stay open for a few weeks longer to provide accommodation for the Australia Day long weekend.

"On Sunday the 26th our last live band performance will be from the sensational 'The Prayer Babies' kicking off at 2.30pm.

"We will be opening the bar over the next couple of weeks until we drain the kegs so please come say goodbye and join us for last drinks. Thank you Radio Springers one and all."

Owners Ken Parfrey and Jackie Airey took over the business in 2009 after it closed for 15 years.

Patrons shared their disappointment on social media.

"What sad news. Thanks for the years of warm welcomes and hospitality, great atmosphere, excellent music and cinema. Ken, Jacqui and Graham have been fixtures at the undisputed centre of the universe. You'll be sorely missed," one wrote.

"Omg what sad news. Wishing you both all the best. I had such good memories, the decor, the amazing food, bands, and of course the wonderful staff," another said.

"So sad that you are closing, but also so thankful for the wonderful memories you have woven throughout the years. You have created such wonderful unique experiences in the lives of so many. Radio Springs will always be the centre of our universe," a third said.
