Port Douglas restaurant affected by gas supply issue
Origin Energy has provided an update regarding a network failure that disrupted Port Douglas' gas supply, causing significant challenges for businesses and residents.
The town’s main street remains without gas, with some restaurants adapting by offering "gasless menus" while others have been forced to close. Many cafes and restaurants have either scaled back operations or shut their doors entirely since the issue arose on Sunday afternoon.
The underground gas lines, operated and supplied by Origin Energy, are believed to be the source of the problem. Origin has been contacted for further updates. In a statement, a spokesperson for the company identified the cause of the failure but acknowledged that accurately estimating repair time remains challenging.
“The reticulated gas network that serves Port Douglas shut down early on Sunday morning following a regulator failure,” the spokesman said.
“Origin’s LPG team responded once alerted, shut down the network and repaired the faulty regulator and are now working to safely reconnect customers.
“We wish to thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience.”
Affected businesses include Macrossan St business Cafe Fresq which has created a “gasless menu”. However, The Little Larder Port Douglas has remained closed after it shut its doors on Sunday as has Lure Restaurant and Bar Port Douglas which closed on Monday.
Accommodation providers have also been impacted, with some guests suffering cold showers only.
According to Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon the council is seeking updates.
“I’m told there was someone from Origin door knocking and it turns out this might not just be a one-day issue, it could be a few days,” she said.
“It has had a big impact on the town, and everyone is a little on edge – we’re in our slack season now but coming into our busy Christmas period.”
