McLaren Vale couple charged with tax fraud

A couple has pleaded not guilty to numerous tax fraud charges in relation to the Artel Restaurant and Gallery in McLaren Vale.

Brad and Karen Redman appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court last week, facing 19 charges of obtaining advantage by financial deception.

In addition to this, Mr Redman is facing a charge of giving a forged doctor’s note to an Australian Taxation Office (ATO) employee.

South Australian newspaper The Advertiser gained access to court documents which show deception charges relating to business activity statements for their business Vales Catering Pty Ltd, the operator of Artel before the venue was shut down.

The statements showed at least one fraud charge per month made between 22 September, 2016 and 24 November 2017.

The Advertiser also reported that Mr Redman’s company, Redaley Pty Ltd, where he was sole director, went into administration with debts over $270,000 and only $44 in the bank.

Redaley was the initial operator of the Artel, before ceasing operations and reopening under a different company, this time run by Karen Redman.

Adelaide Magistrate David McLeod has  despatched the case to the District Court.

The couple will be arraigned in May.
