Restaurant scam warning in WA

Police in Rockingham, just south of Perth, have warned restaurants to be on the look-out for groups of people travelling from regional areas to carry out restaurant scams.

Rockingham police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Brett Reyne has warned small businesses to be wary of customers who say they’ve paid for food but have been overcharged, showing a fake receipt on their phones as proof.

“They have usually added a zero onto their order, so if they’ve paid $35 they have said they have been charged $350,” he said. “They go into restaurants at peak times and then the employees do an EFTPOS refund and transfer money to the scammers.”
