Bartender Andy is top of the shots in new awards

A veteran of Perth’s hospitality scene says the industry’s transformation has ensured owners of local venues have good reason to hold their heads high after years of criticism and comparisons to Eastern States counterparts.

Australian Bartender magazine has announced the finalists of its prestigious awards, with WA bars among the nation’s “best and brightest” competing for titles. The winners will be announced in September.

Special recognition for his “outstanding contribution” to the industry has been given to Andy Freeman, 39, who attributes his success with venues including Varnish on King and Flour Factory in the CBD and Northbridge’s Darlings Supper Club to a team of people committed to producing a quality product and service.

The “20-year industry dude” said his achievements had exceeded his expectations and he was grateful for, and humbled by, his award.

“Over the years, this big award has gone to (Perth hospitality visionary) Geoff Hayward and the rest are east coast people — big influential names who have developed iconic venues, as Geoff did here,” he said.

Mr Freeman said Perth’s tight-knit small bar industry was doing a great job and he was frustrated to hear people talking about economic doom and gloom.

“Things aren’t that bad. We are all working the angles and saying yes to opportunities to keep our brands active,” he said.

“Venues in the city are still quite solid. Other areas might be underperforming, but maybe it’s because the city has grown in the past 24 months and walk-in traffic helps keep us buoyant.”
