Prince Harry dines at The Stables Bar in Perth's CBD

While many restaurants would jump at the chance to host royalty, it seems Prince Harry isn't chasing any freebies or special treatment while in Perth – he paid his own way when dining at The Stables Bar on Wednesday night.

Prince Harry had a quiet night at The Stables Bar in Perth.

Prince Harry had a quiet night at The Stables Bar in Perth.

He didn't shout a meal for his companions either, though restaurant owner Tim McLernon told 6PR Breakfast the group left "quite a sizeable tip".

Mr McLernon said Prince Harry nursed a bottle of Corona, tucked into some pork belly and demolished a dessert platter meant for two before the group of eight asked for the bill.

"He told me how much he loved the food and when he left I saw them in that very Australian way they got the bill, worked out everyone's share. He pulled out his own money and threw it in the pot," he said.

"He was a very nice guy, didn't want to be fussed around and it was a pleasure to have him."

Mr McLernon said staff were given about an hour's notice of the visit and rushed to set up an area suitable for the VIP guest.

"When he got there, we showed him those areas but he didn't want a bar of that. He sort of said 'nah, I'm not interested in private areas or being fussed over, I just want to sit with everyone else' so he grabbed a table and sat down," he said.

"There were quite a few of our staff who were supposed to finish early who chose to stick around and help out."

Despite receiving "hundreds of text messages" urging him to get a photo of the prince, Mr McLernon declined because "it wasn't the right thing".

6PR caller Sue said she was dining at the Hay Street venue with family "two tables over" from the prince.

She said Harry, who is in town for the second part of his stint with the Australian Defence Force, was dressed in civilian clothes, which included a "pale blue shirt".

"We walked right past him. He looked really good, he's much skinnier than he seems on television. Noone took a selfie, no one rushed up to him and took photos, everyone was really good," Sue said.

After spending time earlier this month with NORFORCE, an infantry regiment of the Army Reserve, the prince attended Anzac Day commemorations in Gallipoli before returning to WA for the final two weeks of his month-long ADF secondment.

Local media crews gathered outside Campbell Barracks in Swanbourne shortly after Prince Harry's arrival, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.

He's currently training with the Special Air Service Regiment and will also go to Sydney before leaving for an official tour of New Zealand on May 9.
