KB Hotel in Surry Hills reopens as Keg & Brew

Dove and Olive team reopens KB Hotel in Surry Hills as Keg & Brew Hotel.

TWINKIES and craft beer will be the major drawcards when the revamped K&B Hotel reopens next month.

Dove & Olive owner John Azar bought the Surry Hills pub in July and set about the refurbishment, seconding chef Devendra Sherchan for the venue, which has been renamed the Keg & Brew.

“We’re trying to create the number one bar in Surry Hills in terms of craft beer and American-themed food,” he says.

“The whole craft beer thing started in the States so the two go hand-in-hand. We’re raising the bar - excuse the pun - in our offering.”

The hotel will offer 33 craft beers on tap, with three old-fashioned hand pumps, as well as classics including VB and Carlton Draught.

“We don’t want to be seen as being arrogant and just run expensive craft beer,” Azar says. “We still have a bank of other beers we call the golden oldies.”

The Foveaux St watering hole, a stone’s throw from Central train station, will also sell more than 30 types of bourbon.

While many of the pub’s original heritage features have been kept, including the wall tiles and grand central bar, some tongue-in-cheek Southern style will be incorporated, including cowboy-inspired wallpaper, cowhide panels and stuffed animal heads.

The gaming room will be renamed the Lucky Lounge, with horseshoe fabric chairs, cactuses and a mural on the back wall.

Signature dishes will include Southern-style country chicken and bacon and bourbon steak and Philly cheese steak. Desserts will include deep fried twinkies served with chocolate fondue and sprinkles.

It will also offer affordable daily specials from $9 burgers, steaks and schnitties to a $17 Sunday roast.
