The pub with plenty of beer

Two road trucks full of beer have been delivered to the outback Queensland town of Birdsville ahead of the iconic races.

More than 6000 people are expected to converge on the small town in a couple of weeks.

"Everything is off loaded and chilling down and waiting for the onslaught of everyone to arrive," says Birdsville Hotel manager Kate McDonald.

Ms McDonald says the beer is currently occupying five large cool rooms at the hotel.

She says the arrival of the beer trucks always brings back memories of previous race years.

"It doesn't feel that much earlier that we unloaded the first lot," she says.

"I've been here six years now and it seems to come around quite fast these trucks turning up into town and having to unload them all."

The races will be held on the first Friday and Saturday of September- as they are every year.

Although this year the Saturday race day will coincide with the federal election.

Ms McDonald says there will be a polling booth set up at the Birdsville indoor centre on election day, but race organisers are encouraging people to vote ahead of time.

She says it's difficult to predict how long the line could be on election day.

Birdsville polling booth hours

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Friday: 9:30am - 12:30pm
  • Saturday: 8am - 6pm
