Pilbara councils look to expand 457 visas

Local councils in the Pilbara will lodge a proposal with the State Government to bring in foreign workers to fill positions in the small business sector.

The Pilbara Regional Council has prepared an application for a Regional Migration Agreement, which could allow smaller employers to use offshore workers.

If it is endorsed by the Department of Training and Workforce Development, the plan will be submitted for federal approval.

Council spokesman Tony Friday says small business and community services struggle to find workers.

"What we're looking for are a whole range of new occupations to be added to that list," he said.

"Occupations that aren't current available for 457 visas elsewhere in the country, but we have a particular requirement for in the Pilbara.

"Service industry, disability care workers, local government staff, hospitality staff, a whole range of different occupations."
