Sydney Airport's Terminal 3 dining precinct gets a premium makeover
Sydney Airport has unveiled a dramatically transformed dining precinct at Terminal 3, with the revamped food hub bearing little resemblance to its former self and more than a passing likeness to the airport's international terminals.
Gone are the golden arches and fried chicken buckets. In their place, a curated lineup of Sydney dining favourites has taken up residence in the Qantas and QantasLink domestic terminal, spanning Eastern Suburbs institution Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, RaRa Ramen, Lotus Dumpling Bar, Tres Tacos, Taste of Thai, Italian-inspired Maggio's and much-loved patisserie duo Loulou and Stitch Coffee.
The 11-venue precinct was conceived around a singular ambition, according to Gail Taylor, General Manager Retail at Sydney Airport.
"We really wanted to elevate the experience of passengers and make sure that before they get on their flights, they get something tasty to eat," she said at Thursday's official unveiling, where she framed the overhaul as a direct response to shifting traveller expectations.
"Ultimately, over the last 10-15 years, food has become really important to passengers and airports need to keep up with the [trends] and make sure we are really elevating our offer to make sure the passenger journey as good as it could possibly be."
The precinct has been engineered to serve the leisurely diner and the time-poor traveller. At Icebergs, guests can settle in for a Spaghetti Vongole with Goolwa pipis and Pilu bottarga — tarmac views included — or grab The Iceburger for something more portable. Maggio's spans the full day-part spectrum, from breakfast pastries and brekky classics through to pizzas, hearty sandwiches and cannoli. Those after a morning bite can also source Sonoma Bakery goods, including finger buns and coconut croissants, before heading to the gate.
Sydney Airport chief executive Scott Charlton said the transformation reflects a broader shift in how airports are expected to function.
"We understand here and globally, people are expecting airports to be part of the travel experience and not just a hassle – so hopefully that's what we've created here," he said at the opening.
Taylor echoed the sentiment, pointing to the precinct's locally grounded identity as its defining quality.
"We're proud to partner with local operators to deliver an experience that feels distinctly Sydney, where passengers can relax and dine before boarding," she said.
The full Terminal 3 dining lineup now comprises Icebergs, Lotus Dumpling Bar, Loulou, Maggio's, RaRa Ramen, Slim's Quality Burger, Stitch Coffee, Taste of Thai, The Sushi Platter, Top Juice and Tres Tacos.
