Chapel Street Chinese restaurant damaged in blaze

A Chinese restaurant on Melbourne’s Chapel Street has been damaged by a blaze that ripped through the rear of the building.

Firefighters responded to calls of a fire at Shanghai Street, with 26 firefighters working to control the fire. The blaze was extinguished within 19 minutes of the first fire truck arriving at the scene, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said in a statement.

Commander Greg Badrock told 9News the fire started in the ceiling space of the restaurant.

“It spread through that ceiling space in minutes, but fortunately crews were able to stop it from entering the main structure of the restaurant,” he said.

A residential area above the eatery was searched for occupants, but was vacant.
