Airlie Beach restaurant Hemingway’s to shut its doors

Despite winning a Chef’s Hat after just seven months in business last year, Airlie Beach restaurant Hemingway's will close its doors on Australia Day.

The restaurant situated on Abell Point Marina announced its closure on its Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon.

"After a stellar year of award wins Hemingway's will be closing its doors on Australia Day,” the post said.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our guests for your patronage.

"We look forward to welcoming you back later in the year to try something new.

"Please stay tuned for details.”

The sudden news took locals by surprise. “Our wedding was supposed to be here in 3 months time. Very upsetting for us. Especially as invites have been sent...” one person commented on Facebook

Others had suggestions on the cause of the restaurant’s demise. “If the restaurant was open for lunch and the garden bar open for drinks during the day it would get a lot more patronage. Especially when the cruise ships are in. It is just wasted space as it is during the day. Such a good position but wasted,” another Facebook user posted.
