Fire at Henley Beach South café causes $300k damage

A malfunctioning kitchen appliance at a café in Adelaide’s Henley Beach South has been identified as the cause of a fire which resulted in more than $300,000 worth of damage to four businesses.

Customers were evacuated after witnesses noticed smoke coming from the roof of the Yankee Cafe on Henley Beach Road late last week.

Emergency services were called with more than 30 firefighters fighting the fire for an hour to gain control of the blaze and successfully restricting the flames to the cafe.

The damage to the other three businesses, a butcher, baker and barbershop was limited to smoke damage only.

The café’s owners, Doug Murphy and Steve Mudge, have since set up a gofundme campaign to raise $25,000.

The pair had recently secured a buyer for the business, but have had to remove the offer after the fire.
