Unmanned motel in Orange rejected

Controversial plans for an unmanned motel in Orange's city centre have been rejected.

The City Council last night considered a development application for the 36 room motel, including 37 carparks, on a battleaxe block on Dalton Street.

A number of concerns were raised by neighbours, who were worried about increased noise and traffic and reduced privacy as a result of the business.

The mayor John Davis says it was a unanimous decision.

"The amenity of the area, the councillors thought and the information they received from the neighbours in regards to noise, traffic, also the actual design of the building," he said.

"The councillors I believe made the decision that it wasn't in keeping with the area."

Councillor Davis says the motel posed another major concern.

"That security issue.

"If there was something that could go amiss, not saying that it would but if it happened there would be that time delay and it certainly was a very unusual development.

"Orange needs accommodation.

"You know maybe it just came up or was presented the wrong way and probably there needed to be a little bit more thought given to the process."
