Major redevelopment of Brisbane’s Eagle Street Pier

Dexus’s proposal to transform the Brisbane waterfront precinct Eagle Street Pier has had the nod from the Queensland government. Total cost: $1.4 billion.

Eagle Street Pier sits at the heart of Brisbane’s financial district.

It’s also become the city’s hub for food and entertainment, housing some of Brisbane’s best fine dining venues including ARIA, Pony and Saké. These restaurants’ buildings would be demolished under the plans.

The plan is to transform Eagle Street Pier into a premium business and leisure destination.

It will see two new towers being built in the waterfront precinct with the opportunity to use these commercially, residentially or as a hotel and retail space.

Added to that is the refurbishment of the heritage-listed 115-year-old building Naldham House, along with 1.5 hectares of public and riverfront open space, an improved Riverwalk section across the neighbouring botanic gardens. There will also be a new traffic-free precinct, a widened river walkway with better access for cyclists and pedestrians.

And there’s the promise of more restaurants and casual eateries.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is enthusiastic about the project, now waiting to be finalised.

“While ultimate approval of the proposal rests with the Queensland Government, Council has expressed its initial support of this Market-Led Proposal, recognising the many economic, lifestyle and leisure opportunities such a project would bring to our New World City,” Quirk told delicious.com.au.

Dexus CEO Darren Steinberg said the project would revitalise Brisbane.

“The ambition of the proposal is to revitalize Brisbane’s premier dining hub and give back the waterfront to the Brisbane community, creating a place that celebrates Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate and delivers a global-standard business address and tourist destination in the heart of the CBD,”Steinberg told delicious.com.au.

Dexus, which purchased a 50 percent stake in Eagle Street Pier and the Waterfront Place commercial tower.in 2015, now has to undertake a feasibility study into the project.
