Sydney’s fish market goes online

It had to happen: sooner or later the seafood industry was going to go online and start selling prawns, shrimps, lobsters and fish over the web.

Starting this week, people will be able to buy seafood from Manettas online at Peter Mannettas Seafood. https://www.manettas.com.au/

Peter Manettas, a vendor at the Sydney Fish Market for three generations, is now taking orders online. And he has plans to expand the operation around Australia.

It’s a proposition that could attract many customers. After all, it’s so much easier to go on the web, place an order for the kind of seafood you want and get it delivered the next day. That’s better than braving the gridlock of Sydney’s traffic and driving out to Glebe to check out the market stalls.

Customers have until midnight to place their orders. They can also specify how they want the seafood prepared. Refrigerated trucks deliver the food the next day between 9am and 9pm. If customers need the food earlier, say, if they’re putting on a dinner, they can specify it.

Mr Mannettas says every item sold is sourced directly from the Sydney Fish Market morning auction.  He has also brought in 20 suppliers from around the country, not to mention the local fishing community.

The website has been developed over the last year with partners including the Sydney Fish Market itself and other fisheries around Australia.

Of course, Manettas comes from a pioneering family. His grandfather, Peter Manettas sr founded the market. His son Nicholas created fish and seafood restaurants for Sydney, including the Nick’s Restaurant and the Cyren Bar.

“We are excited to be pioneering this new frontier in the seafood industry in Australia,” Mr Manettas told The Australian. “The prospect of changing the industry and giving people access to this level of product at an affordable price is a first in Australia.”
