Tipping in Australia is rising but many in Melbourne still refuse

Going out to a restaurant in Australia did not used to involve tipping, but more often than not now it does.

DO you refuse to tip when you eat out in Melbourne?

You are now outnumbered by those who do — but only just.

Almost 60 per cent of Australians do tip, according to a survey by Clipp, a payments and deals mobile app for pubs and restaurants.

The survey of 2,024 customers at pubs and restaurants found 42 per cent of people in Melbourne said they did not tip.

In Sydney, half of tippers put in 5-10 per cent of the restaurant bill, in Melbourne it was only 34 per cent.

The number one motivation for rewarding wait staff is fast and attentive service (56 per cent), the survey found — not the attractiveness of the server, a great meal or special privilege such as a nice table.

People in their 50s were the biggest tippers.

Tipping 15-20 per cent is obligatory in the US because base wages for hotel and waiting staff are low.

But we’ve not always had a tipping culture in Australia.
