South Grafton bartender gets UGLY for a good cause

SOUTH Grafton bartender Michael Daly is proof being U.G.L.Y can be a beautiful thing.

The Australian Hotel employee is one of thousands of bartenders across Australia who have signed up for Leukaemia Foundation's annual fundraising competition, U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year.

And in an effort to prove he has what it takes to be the ugliest, he will host a family-friendly fundraiser at the Australian Hotel tomorrow, complete with live music, crazy hair, kids activities and and an auction of gift vouchers and merchandise donated by local businesses.

Every $80 raised on the day will provide one night of free accommodation to a regional family during blood cancer treatment in the city.

Mr Daley said he was a latecomer to the competition, only deciding to do it when he saw it advertised on television.

"I talked to the boss at the pub and he said go for it, we'll back you 100%," he said.

"I started a bit later than everyone else, but fortunately through knowing people in town I've been able to put something pretty good together. We've got nearly $3000 worth of merchandise and vouchers."

Starting from 2pm tomorrow, there will be a jumping castle and a face painting/balloon maker for the kids.

This will be followed by an acoustic set by a local duo and the auction.

Sometime in the afternoon Mr Daley will also have his hair permanently dye multiple colours, in the spirit of keeping things U.G.L.Y

Which, for the record, stands for Understanding Generous Likeable You.
